The Onze of September Catalonia commemorates the defeat suffered in 1714 by the Spanish troops of Felipe V de Borbón. Catalonia, which had until then been a sovereign nation, lost its national freedoms, the laws of the country and suffered a ban on Catalan language and culture.
After years of darkness, in 1932, within the framework of the Second Spanish Republic, Catalonia acquired a Statute of Autonomy that recovered part of its national freedoms. But after the Civil War, Franco’s dictatorship led to the toughest repression ever suffered by Catalonia, to the extent that we can speak of an attempt at cultural genocide, with thousands of thousands of executed and reprisals. Even among them are the President of the Government of Catalonia, Lluís Companys, the only European president shot by Nazism-Fascism.
In 1979 a new Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia was approved, with which the country was provided with its own institutions and government, but a satisfactory level of self-government has not yet been achieved.
Every September 11, many Catalans and Catalans continue to demonstrate through the streets to demand the recognition of our national rights and more self-government.
The Liberty Festival is configured as a political act of Catalan civil society, to celebrate the Day in a festive and at the same time claimative way. We want to make this event a political act of national affirmation and vindication, in an open and participatory way. For this reason, since 2000, some 200 entities of Catalan civil society have celebrated an event that includes a sample of entities, the reading of a manifesto that has the support of the entities and a music concert which closes the celebration.
In Sitges it commemorates itself with an institutional event where all the associations and groups of the town are invited to make a floral offering. In the evening there is an audition-dance of sardanas.
